THEY both put up with a lot of rubbish - but mums have a lower social status than road sweepers, according to a top doc.

Dr Oliver James says women feel "unvalued" when they have children, putting them at higher risk of becoming depressed.

Poorer mums are the most at risk too - few have fulfilling jobs so they put more pressure on parenthood to make them feel worthwhile.

With the result that a recent survey found that only four out of ten mums in households on less than £20k said having kids made them happier.

The figures rose to six in ten for higher-earning women.

Dr James said low-income and uneducated mothers place less importance on their job.

"They may be happier giving it up and place higher hopes on the role of mother. This has a lower status than that of street sweeper, so they feel unvalued."
